Let the games begin!  Building a chessboard is easier than you think and is always a crowd pleaser.  These free plans will make you the king or queen at your next game night.   The holidays are right around the corner and this chess board project makes a perfect gift for any occasion. This is the type of item that will pass down through the family, so built it with care.

The seven steps are highlighted with photographs and detailed instructions.  Peppered along the way with good advice to help the project flow smoothly.

You will need the following:

  • Saw (preferably a table saw)
  • Bar clamps
  • Wood glue
  • Orbital sander
  • Framing square
  • Light and dark wood (enough to make four 2 x 20-inch strips, 3/4-inch thick, in each color)

A table saw will make the project easier but a circular saw will do the trick if you set up a straight edge to operate the saw against.  Choosing two woods of similar hardness will make finishing simpler.
