My sister and I thrived in our tree house as kids. We refused as the summer heat turned to crisp fall to not spend a night a outside despite the mosquitoes. My father only built the best and the Free Tree House Plan is pretty similar to what I remember. Ours, like this one, was more of platformed playhouse, but it makes the design applicable to any yard.

This one comes complete with a plan for a tower and porch. The closed in walls provide some privacy, and if you allow your kids to sleep out, the walls were great protection from the elements. Just click on the image for the full how to woodwork guide.

If you are considering a playset for your backyard, you might want to ramp it up to a tree house like this. You will get years of use and when the kids are older, you will have a back yard shed. I even have a neighbor who took a similar tree house plan and built his play set off of the side. The tree house was a great structure.

Growing up, my counsins and I had a cheap pastel colored plastic monstrosity play house that my parents gladly shoved in the back corner behind some bushes. This Free Club House Plan is not only the perfect play palace, it’s also an attractive addition to an outdoor living space.

What I like about this plan are the open windows that make watching the kids from a far a little bit easier. It’s a pretty simple build and an excellent way to get your child involved in a woodworking project. The authentic roof is a great touch and with some shelves or build in boxes it could double as a storage solution for toys scattered throughout the yard. When you are building this club house, consider the future use. When I built my own, I had a narrow door until a neighbor came by and asked if my lawnmower would fit through…. (cricket noise here, light bulb over head). The plan changed on the spot. An extra 4″ width on the door and I have a storage shed once my son vacates his play house!

Kids rooms can sometimes be really tight, especially when two younger children are sharing one space. A great way to maximum to the space in a room is by building up. 9 Steps and $20 – A Child’s Adirondack Chair

This child’s Adirondack chair is a terrific project. In addition to being beautiful, this kid sized chair is inexpensive and easy to build. If you have your own Adirondack Chairs, and a 3 year old, they will wonder why they don’t have one. This is your chance to build one. In addition to building a beautiful project, this is an ideal plan to work on with your child. Obviously, a child might not be able to do too much, but trust me when I say that they will believe they built the chair after they help turn a few screws, drill a hold and paint one slat. That is part of the fun of it.

Working on a woodworking project with your kids is a great way to help them begin to understand that they can do anything they choose to. There is something about this that they will carry with them for the rest of their life.

This plan comes from Ana White. The Ana-White.com site is absolutely fantastic. In my 15+ years online, I don’t think that I have ever stumbled across the site. I am prepping to do some renovation work on a Lake Erie Cottage and located some great plans at the site. Bunk beds and simple outdoor furniture will be a must. Free Longboard Skate Board Plans

My son has become an avid skateboarder and he sees the older kids riding by on long boards. Some of you might have already downloaded the free skate ramp plans. Of course, he would now like a long board. As a father, and woodworker, I will take it upon myself to provide a longboard from my son. A bit indulgent, but it is fun to show your kids that they can build anything that they want. Don’t be afraid to try.

A longboard is a nice project to build yourself, and with your kids. The style of the longboard can be customized to sue your taste and the graphics on the board can be one of the more fun projects you will be involved in.

If you are going to build a sandbox for your kids, why not build something that is comfortable for a parent and has the ability to put the kids tools and toys in a safe spot that is out of sight.

This free sandbox plan comes from “southernpine.com”. A sandbox might be a simple wood plan, but seeing some variations to a traditional sand box plan can be a big help in opening up your creativity.

The small deck portion is great as a second level of play. The bench portion makes a nice seat and is a great area to store the tools/toys when not in use.

The following is a terrific toy box plan that is simple and functional. This free plan comes from Home Depot Canada. Lucky for the US based woodworkers (me included) the plans are NOT in metric. They are standard.

Since these to box plans come from Home Depot, you will simply be able to print the plan and head to your local store to shop fore every item needed. This is the big benefit to plans that come from the major home centers. Simply print, shop, build!

The plan is basic and can be built in just a few hours (painting might take longer).

Knock Down Picnic Table

A couple of years back, a reader of www.woodworkcity.com asked about a plan for a children’s table that could be assembled and then knocked-down after use (assembled like a puzzle). We were able to locate a basic knock down table plan, but found a much more detailed one this morning.

This plan has detailed drawings with illustrations for the detailed cuts and interlocking pieces.

The entire table is made from a single sheet of plywood! The plan comes from Kevin Ayer and is a terrific project to build with your kids.

Free Children’s Knock Down Table Plans (PDF)

If you are considering this as an outdoor table, take the material into consideration. Plywood is not a material that behaves well when faced with the elements. The idea behind having a knock-down table is that you can assemble and disassemble as needed. If it must remain outside, a high quality finish is a must. Not a stain, but a finish that includes exterior primer and a couple of coats of a high quality exterior paint.

If you are looking to build your own play set, you will want many options to give your children many options for their outdoor play. The following plan incorporates a swing set, horizontal ladder (rungs), climbing wall, and fort area.

The plans are in PDF format and provide a number of views to build from.
