12 Foot Adirondack Chair!

I received a call the other day from someone looking for some Adirondack style swing plans.  I tried to point him in the right direction and we got to talking.  I was asking about his woodworking skill level and it was clear he knew what he was doing around the shop.  As with many woodworkers, we love to start with a plan as a guide for scale and design ideas.    Scott was no exception.

We were chatting about Adirondack projects and Scott told me about a 12 foot tall Adirondack chair that he built for Brant Lake Camp in 2005. The chair was built as a gift in celebration of the camp’s 90th anniversary.  Brant Lake Camp is in NY, just north of Lake George, NY.  Scott built the chair with his assitant Jake Ezratty, then 16.  Jake is now an Engineering student at Union College.  You have to wonder if Jake would have gone down the path to becoming an engineer if it weren’t for experiences like this.

The giant Adirondack chair is to scale and is a terrific landmark for the location.  If I was running a business selling Adirondack furniture, or even sold chairs by the roadside (like many of our readers do), I would build my own Giant Adirondack.  This would be an incredible landmark that would very likely become known.  Can’t you just hear someone giving directions and explaining “turn left at the giant Adirondack chair”.

Photos below.  Thank you to Scott and Jake for providing images.

If you are in the Colorado area, you can lend a hand to the local Habitat chapter.  It looks like Scott is a big part of the Roaring Fork Valley Habitat for Humanity chapter.

    Guys,

I hope that the builder of this chair is paying attention to this post. The comments are clearly displaying a desire for the plans.

I am not sure if Scott and Jake had plans when they built the chair.

I would bet that most builders could come up with a pretty good layout, based on the pictures, if they were challenged to. We always end up with a bit more waste when we ‘wing it’, but it can be done.

To all who are after their own 12′ Adirondack chair, I wish you the best. Unfortunately, this was simply a summer project at a camp that one of our readers submitted to us. I thought it was a terrific project to feature.

I don’t know anyone who is selling this project, or plan, but I do know that a skilled handyman could build one for you with a photo of the chair. It will take some trial and error, but someone should be able to construct something similar with a picture.

What would you pay for such an item? Perhaps you could throw out an offer price range, along with your City and State, and one of the readers of http://www.WoodworkCity.com could offer their services.

      Best of luck.

Thanks for the update on purchasing these chairs. Is it possible that a skilled craftsman could manipulate the design of a normal size chair to that of a 12 foot chair?

      Heather,

At this scale, the design will be limited. However, with skills, a lot can happen. Express what you are after and I am sure that someone, with skills, can make it happen.

If you do find someone, please share the experience.

A few people have asked about plans for a giant Adirondack chair. Here is a set of plans to check out. This is a real nice style and a classic design.

Good luck to all of you giant chair builders.

      Melodee,

That is Awesome! There is something about the over sized Adirondack. Such a great color. It must make you smile every time you see it.
