Toy Box Plans

Free plans to build your own toy box or toy chest.  What child (or parent) doesn’t need a toy box?  A parent needs one to get rid of the clutter, a child needs one as a cool place to keep his or her toys and to learn about cleaning up after themselves.

This woodworking plan is rather simple and can be painted to make it something that is geared more toward a boy or a girl.

This is a woodworking project that you can have your child help you with.  There are a number of steps where the construction is simple and doesn’t require dangerous tools.  This is a good opportunity to get your child involved.

Rolling File Cabinet Plans

If you have a home office, I am sure that you have come to need more and more storage. If you are a woodworker, I am guessing that you might be a bit of a pack rat as well. This plan is for a mobile file cabinet. Essentially, a file cabinet on wheels. The design is nice with inset drawer fronts. You could build an easier file cabinet, but this one has a very nice look that is clean and contemporary. This file cabinet would look great in a contemporary setting and because it is on wheels it doesn’t have to be stuck in one place.

Good luck building your rolling file cabinet. Click on the picture for the complete wood plans from ‘Popular Woodworking’

Apothecary Cabinet Plans

Have you ever wanted to build a nice apothecary cabinet? This woodworking plan is easy to follow and breaks the construction down into steps. I have seen finished projects that people tried to improvise and the finished product isn’t near the quality that you will obtain by following the free plans for this apothecary cabinet.

The hardest part of a project like this is making sure that your tolerances are low. A nice fitting drawer is a must to be sure that the quality of this cabinet comes across.

The plan dimensions are metric, so some conversion will be needed. Remember, 1 millimeter = 0.0393700787 inches.

Arbor Plans - Arch

Arbor plans - archwayThese arbor plans are provide by Lowe’s and are a stunning upgrade to a door that lacks a porch or covered entry. You will be surprised at how much the character of a home can change with a couple of projects. The arbor plans are completed in 8 steps. When I am working on a woodworking project, I prefer to break it into manageable pieces and this plan does just that.

The plans call for pressure treated lumber. That is fine if you are going to paint the arbor. If you want a higher end look, and don’t want to have to paint your arbor, I would recommend using western red cedar or redwood. Both are great choices that don’t require a finish. The wood will weather to a classic gray. If you get tired of that look, you can power wash the wood to bring the color back out. Sealing the wood with an outdoor product will help retain the original rich color. It is a matter of preference.

Good luck. This is a great project for any skill level.

Redwood Recliner Plans

A Redwood Recliner is a great outdoor project.  In fact, during the winter months, you could build a couple so that you are ready to lie out on your patio or deck when summer comes.

This recliner might also be referred to as a lounger or a chaise.

Redwood is probably the ideal wood to use for this outdoor project, but there are other products that would make a fine alternative.

Choosing the proper lumber is important to be sure that you outdoor furniture project lasts for years.  There isn’t a perfect answer for the type of wood to use.  Your choice should be determined based upon the local lumber supply and cost of material.  In some areas, redwood is common and reasonably priced.  In others, it needs to be a special order.  You will probably need to source your material from a lumber yard rather than a store like Home Depot or Lowe’s.  Check your yellow pages under ‘Lumber’.

If I was building this project I would consider the following material.

Note: I would not use pressure treated lumber for this type of project. There are some harsh chemicals used to treat the lumber and aren’t always safe to have direct contact with.

Arts and Crafts Style Desk

arts and crafts desk - craftsman style library table craftsman desk
This arts and crafts style library table, or desk, is a beautiful addition to any home.  The lines are simple and the material should work with any decor.  This project will require some advanced woodworking skill and tools, but the end result is terrific.

Some people will refer to this as a library table.  Most would call it a desk.

I would encourage anyone who is going to build this project to make a thoughtful decision about your material choices.  I would consider something that would be expected if this was a desk that was built 80 years ago.  Quarter sawn oak, or Cherry are both great choices and are historically accurate.

Good luck with your project. Click on the picture for the full woodworking plans.

Office Display Cabinet Plans

If you are looking for a stylish display cabinet for your office, and want to build something that is flexible and stylish, you need to take a look at this free office cabinet woodworking plan. The plan was first published in Popular Mechanics Back in Jan 1999.

The cabinet calls for lower doors made of wood with upper doors that are made of glass. Since the cabinet offers lighting and glass shelves, this would be a perfect place to display your office related treasures.

Office Cabinet Plans

If you have never attempted a large scale woodworking project, this is a good plan to work with. The design is simple, but there is still a good amount of detail to flex your woodworker muscles. Even though the project is large, the component pieces are a nice scale to work with. The cabinet is essentially made up of 4 boxes. There is an upper and lower section for each side and then it is all tied together with a base, a mid section, and a header. This method makes the cabinet manageable and still ties it together into an impressive piece of furniture.

Good luck building this beautiful office cabinet.
